How long does bioWRAP® take to biodegrade after disposal?

bioWRAP® typically biodegrades within approximately 3–5 years after reaching an active landfill.

The timeline depends on landfill biology — moisture, microbial activity, and temperature influence how fast microbes consume the material. Just like food waste decomposes faster in some landfills than others, our plastic biodegradation speed varies by site.

For comparison:

  • Conventional shrink wrap: persists for centuries and fragments into microplastics
  • bioWRAP®: converted by microorganisms into gas, water and organic matter. No microplastics left behind.

Importantly, the film does not weaken during storage or seasonal use. The biodegradation process begins only after disposal in a landfill where the anaerobic microbial environment exists.
